Vishal Mangalwadi’s The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of the Western World is a rare gem. I cannot remember the last time I read something so hopeful, so rich in history, or so profound. This is a much-needed work in a culture that has become ahistorical. Mr. Mangalwadi’s observations are unique because he is Indian and can see and appreciate aspects of our culture that we have taken for granted and even forgotten.
This book provides breathtaking views of the Bible’s unique influence on history and life. He compares and contrasts Western culture to his own and other cultures and shows why, for example, the West moved forward while other nations or cultures did not. Why, he asks, did the very idea of human dignity flourish in the West and remain stunted in many parts of Asia? Where did our expectation of universal education come from? Why did science advance in the West and not in other places?Vishal Mangalwadi traces the answers to these questions back to the Bible in a way that is completely engaging and illuminating. I am grateful.
I cannot recommend this book enough. It is the first book I chose to review from booksneeze.com and I suspect there won’t be another quite like it on their lists for a long time to come.
